musings of a filipina immigrant
I always tell people this: I’m not in the Philippines for a reason. I don’t think I was ‘escaping’ intentionally — things happened, and I took an opportunity presented to me. I wasn’t planning on completely uprooting my life to another country. I was planning to go back! But I realized I truly thrived outside the Philippines — no matter how much I wanted it to happen in my homeland.
This is my way of reconnecting with my roots, while recognizing that I’ve planted and nurtured myself somewhere else.
why write about filipino (ish) food?
An obvious answer: I love cooking. I love eating. Another frustration I had was how extremely judgmental Filipinos can be when other chefs (Filipino or not!) present their recipes online. Like what authentic adobo is and what it isn’t… when we’re a food culture that relies on a lot of sauces: toyo, patis, suka, you name it. Our culture is a culture of adjustments & changes — and I want to fully embrace that. Especially now that I’m not in the Philippines, not every ingredient will be available! Substitutes, always welcome.
While most of my recipes will probably revolve around Filipino (and Asian) flavors, I don’t want it to be exclusively JUST Filipino food, primarily because I love eating non-Filipino food, too! And those will come, along with reviews. Because why not. It’s my blog, lol.
our community
I want to reiterate that this community encourages openness and adjustments: it’s your food! It’s your palate! I highly encourage adjusting to what you want and need. Also, I will never post calorie information (long story short — I had an eating disorder and discourage people from basing their entire world of eating on calories).
posting
I will send out a newsletter at least once a week, going over our blog posts at Pinay Eats, including other musings about food and life.
salamat!
